General Motors is moving production of its Chinese-made Buick SUV to a factory in the United States

DETROIT — GM The company plans to move production of Buick’s compact SUV from China to the United States for domestic sales, the company confirmed Thursday.

GM said the next generation of the vehicle is expected to be built at the automaker’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, starting in 2028. The next generation of Buick’s U.S.-built compact SUV will be sold domestically, meaning production of the vehicle in China may also continue for sales elsewhere.

The move comes as President Donald Trump pressures companies to produce domestically and as friction grows between the United States and China, including tariffs on vehicles.

The Detroit automaker has been producing the Buick Envision compact SUV in China for the US since 2017. However, the company declined to confirm the name of the next generation of the vehicle that will move to the US.

“GM will ground production of the next generation Buick compact SUV to Fairfax Assembly in Kansas City, beginning in 2028. This decision strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports jobs in the U.S., building on $5.5 billion of new investment announced across U.S. manufacturing sites last year,” GM said in an email statement.

Buick’s compact car is expected to join production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox at the Kansas plant after limited production of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt. GM said Equinox production will begin in 2027.

U.S. Envision sales have topped 40,000 over the past three years, accounting for roughly a quarter of Buick’s sales during that time period.

GM’s decision to produce Buick’s compact SUV in the United States was first reported by Reuters.
