✅ **What You’ll Learn**:

General Motors is relocating its vehicles in a move that would shift production away from China and Mexico and to a US factory in Kansas. This change will also mean the end of the rebooted Chevrolet Bolt EV, the only vehicle currently built at the Fairfax, Kansas, assembly plant.

The musical chairs at the plant reflect an economic and political environment, shaped by the Trump administration’s tariff policy and its decision to end the federal electric vehicle tax credit, which offered up to $7,500 off eligible electric vehicles. These changes have increased the cost of manufacturing vehicles in China and Mexico and then selling them in the United States.

Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV, which arrived at dealerships this month, is expected to end in about a year and a half. Priced at $29,990 including destination charge, the new Chevy Bolt EV is one of the most affordable new electric vehicles available to U.S. consumers.

GM confirmed to TechCrunch that the next-generation Buick Envision, currently manufactured in China, will move to the Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas, starting in 2028. The gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, which is built at the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, will move to the Kansas plant in mid-2027.

Meanwhile, the Bolt’s life will be short if GM follows through on its previously announced plans.

“When we unveiled the Bolt in October, we said, and it was widely reported, that it would be a limited-run model,” a GM spokesperson said in a statement sent to TechCrunch. “We also previously announced that the gas-powered Equinox will be coming to Fairfax in mid-2027 following reduced Bolt production. Today we’re announcing that the next generation of Buick’s compact SUV will be coming to Fairfax starting in 2028.”

The company still sells other electric vehicles, including the Chevy Equinox EV and the Chevy Blazer. The question is whether GM will change course and save the Bolt if sales are better than expected. We know that GM has promised to make new future investments in Fairfax Assembly for the next generation of affordable electric vehicles. We don’t know when.
