Rory McIlroy shot 67 at four under par, but it wasn’t enough to get past winner Jacob Bridgman, who won by one shot at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles.
Northern Ireland’s McIlroy started the day six shots off the pace, but despite hitting five birdies, he was unable to catch American Bridgeman, who crossed the line with a one-over-par 72 to finish on 18 under par.
Bridgeman, who had a seven-shot lead early in the day, fought back tears on the 18th green before hitting a three-footer for his first PGA Tour title.
He is also the first man to win the prestigious event in his first appearance in the tournament since 1975.
Bridgeman’s victory continues his good start to the year after two top-10 finishes in his opening four events, including an eighth-place finish last week at Pebble Beach.
The 26-year-old’s three bogies on the final day at Riviera Country Club gave hope to the chasing players, including compatriot Kurt Kitayama, who finished tied for second with McIlroy on 17 under par after a 64-under-par score.
World number two McIlroy was even after the first nine holes, but made four birdies on the back nine, including a stunning hole-in-one from the greenside bunker on the 12th, to put pressure on Bridgeman.
A tense closing three holes meant Bridgeman bogeyed 16 and then left his putt on 18 to within three feet, after McIlroy drained a 30-footer to get in the putt, to ensure a tense final putt ahead of tournament host Tiger Woods.
Bridgeman held his nerve to claim his first PGA Tour title in style, as a win in one of the marquee events moved him into the top 25 of the world rankings for the first time.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood shot a four-under-par 67 to finish seventh on 12 points, which included a birdie eagle with a powerful shot from 15 from 173 yards.
World No. 1 Scottie Schaeffler had a great finish with a 65 that helped him recover from his poor start on Thursday to finish 12th.
That meant the end of Scheffler’s remarkable run of 18 consecutive top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.
England’s Marco Ping, who was joint leader alongside Bridgeman after the second round, finished tied for 16th on 10 under.
Max Grayserman produced another big event of the day as he birdied a hole-in-one on the 14th, brightening a tough day for him as he made four bogeys and a double bogey on 73.
