Gini Hermoso: The Spanish striker has been recalled after a 12-month absence by new coach Sonia Bermudez

Hermoso played a key role in her team’s success at the 2023 World Cup – beating England in the final – and her three goals and performances helped her win the tournament’s Silver Ball.

But she then became the subject of controversy when the then president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, kissed her on the lips without her consent as she went to collect her winner’s medal in Sydney.

Despite resisting calls to resign, Rubiales was forced to step down and was fined €10,800 (£8,942) after the Spanish Supreme Court found him guilty of sexual assault.

Hermoso then played a role in Spain’s qualifiers for Euro 2025 and helped them win a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

But after the match against Canada, Toomey said she did not choose the striker because of her performance with her Mexican club.

“I understand she’s angry that she wasn’t called when she felt she had to be,” Tommy said.

“I try to be respectful, I always have been. I make my arguments, I have a clear conscience and I know I have acted professionally. We have followed Jenny up in her team with the help of information from her coaches.”

Leon (30 years old) returns after his last participation in the 2022 European Championship, where Spain lost to the Lionesses in the quarter-finals.

She was then one of 15 players who asked not to be called up amid a dispute over working conditions and the behavior of then-coach Jorge Villeda.

While most of those striking players returned after Villeda was replaced by his former assistant Tommy in September 2023 following the Rubiales scandal, Leon did not.
