Giro d’Italia 2026: Betiol wins the stage while Eulaliu keeps the pink

Italian Alberto Pettiol won stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia with stunning acceleration on the final climb in the Italian lakes.

The 32-year-old Bitiol eventually won the 189km stage in bright sunlight by 26 seconds over Uno-X Mobility’s Leknessund, although he almost crashed after bouncing violently on a drainage grate as he took more and more risks to secure victory.

Belgian Jasper Stuyven from Soudal Quick Step took third place at the head of a smaller group, 44 seconds behind, while Briton Mark Donovan took fifth place.

In the battle for overall victory, Portuguese Afonso Eulalio of Bahrain Victorious remained in the pink jersey, 33 seconds behind two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard.

Visma-Lease a Bike’s Vingegaard, 29, is widely expected to get the pink before the three-week race reaches Rome on May 31, and Saturday’s huge mountain stage in the Italian Alps could be the day he swaps the king of the mountains’ blue jersey for the overall leader’s pink jersey.

Wenggaard denied reports that he had fallen ill earlier in the week, insisting he was feeling “100%”.

Pettiol added his second Giro d’Italia stage win to Palmares which also includes the one-day ‘memorial’ of the Tour of Flanders, which he won in 2019.

Meanwhile, Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes won the sprint race in the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas in Spain.

Star runner SD Worx came across the line first, in a group that saw Britain’s Millie Couzens from Fenix-Premier Tech take seventh place.
