Google is adding a way to create automated workflows to Opal

Google announced Tuesday that it is adding a new way to create automated workflows to its Opal coding app. The company said that the new agent being introduced in Opal will allow users to create applets that can allow them to plan and execute tasks using text prompts.

The feature uses the Gemini 3 Flash model and automatically selects the tools needed to perform tasks. For example, it can use Google Sheets to preserve memory across sessions, such as a shopping list for an e-commerce-related application. The new agent creates and plans the next step of tasks himself.

Google said that these agents are inherently interactive, meaning that if they need more information, they will ask users to enter it or offer them options to determine next steps, if necessary. With this addition, users with no technical knowledge can create complex workflows within their applications, the company claims.

Opal was first introduced to users in the United States in July 2025. The tool allows anyone to create small web applications or remix existing applications. In October 2025, the company rolled out Opal to users in 15 more countries, including Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil and Singapore. A month later, the company made the tool available in more than 160 countries. In December, Google added the tool to its Gemini web app, allowing users to create custom apps through a visual editor without writing any code.

Besides Google, several other startups are also building tools that allow users to create apps via natural language prompts. Lovable and Replit are among the most popular, but other startups like Wabi, the former founder of Replika, SoftBank, Lightspeed-backed Emergent, and Accel-backed Rocket.new are also gaining popularity.
