Google’s Gemini AI Assistant hits the road in millions of vehicles

Google announced Thursday that it will begin rolling out Gemini for Google built-in cars, marking a significant upgrade from the current Google Assistant. The move signals Google’s quest to bring more advanced conversational AI to the driving experience.

The announcement comes on the heels of news from General Motors, which revealed yesterday that the Gemini will reach nearly 4 million vehicles from the 2022 model year and later, which includes brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. However, today’s announcement did not mention specific automakers, suggesting that the Gemini will not be limited to GM vehicles.

The US rollout will begin with English language support, with availability expanding over the coming months. It is worth noting that Gemini is not only limited to new cars, but also to existing compatible cars via software updates.

Google Embedded Cars first launched in 2020. Now, according to Google, the new Gemini update enables a more natural, conversational way for drivers to interact with their cars.

Soon, drivers will be able to speak more freely to complete tasks, explore ideas or retrieve information. For example, a driver could say he wants to stop for lunch at a highly rated restaurant with outdoor seating along his route. Gemini can pull relevant suggestions using data from Google Maps, then handle follow-up questions like parking availability or menu options, including dietary preferences.

Gemini can also complete tasks such as turning on the heater, providing directions, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and helping drivers respond hands-free.

Additionally, there’s Gemini Live, which is currently in beta and allows for more open, real-time conversations. Drivers can activate it by tapping a button on the interface or by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” enabling the exchange of ideas, learning or general discussion while on the road.

Drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles will be prompted with the upgrade option. Once enabled, Gemini can be accessed through voice commands, on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.

Google says it plans to expand Gemini support to additional languages ​​and regions. Future updates are also expected to deepen integration with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
