Former West Ham coach Graham Potter has been announced as the new Swedish national team coach.

The 50-year-old has accepted the role on an initial short-term basis in a bid to help Sweden in their faltering World Cup qualifying campaign.

“I feel very humbled by this task, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said. “Sweden has great players who are performing in the best leagues in the world over the weeks.

“My task will be to create the conditions so that as a team we can perform at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”

Sweden has been searching for a new coach since John Dahl Tomasson was sacked following a 1-0 loss to Kosovo on October 13, a result that made direct qualification from their group impossible.

However, they can still reach the play-offs even without finishing top two in Group B as a result of their success in the 2024-2025 Nations League, where they topped their group.

Potter was sacked as West Ham coach at the end of September after a disappointing start to the season.
