Greenock Morton chairman John Laird has stepped down from the club due to online abuse and threats towards him and his family.

Laird, who has been associated with the club for more than four decades, said criticism that was originally related to football matters had turned into personal attacks.

He added that he was “deeply disappointed” to leave the club in this way and would leave with immediate effect.

This news comes two weeks after Celtic president Peter Lawwell announced that he would step down from his position due to the extent of the abuse and threats he received.

Laird said he did not take the decision to leave lightly.

He added: “The ongoing online abuse, threatening and insulting behavior directed towards me and my family, and defamatory comments made in writing and online have now crossed an unacceptable line.”

“What started as criticism regarding football matters has escalated into behavior affecting my personal life, my family, my family and my business interests.

“This situation is no longer tolerable, and I cannot allow my continued association with the club to negatively and sadly affect myself and the people close to me.

“I am deeply disappointed to step down under these circumstances.”

Manager Dougie Emery left the club to join Raith Rovers in November

Mr Laird was born in Greenock and has been involved in running companies in the energy sector and sporting events management.

He assumed the position of Chairman of Morton’s Board of Directors in 2023.

A club spokesman said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank John for his efforts and dedication during his time at the club, and wish him all the best for the future.”

“Online or in-person abuse of any kind towards players, staff, officials or fans is completely unacceptable and has no place in football or in society.”

Manager Dougie Emery left the club in November to take over at Raith Rovers. Cappielow’s team currently sits in sixth place in the championship.

Former Motherwell and Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies, who was appointed as the club’s manager this summer, is currently leading the club’s management team as they search for a replacement for Emery.
