Team Great Britain skater Gus Kenworthy says he received death threats after posting a video message about US Immigration and Customs Enforcement – known as ICE.
Kenworthy shared the photo – which preceded the word “ICE” with an expletive – on Instagram a week before she was scheduled to compete in the Winter Olympics in Italy.
The 34-year-old was born in Chelmsford but grew up in America and won a silver medal in downhill skiing at the 2014 Sochi Games, before switching allegiance to Team GB in 2019.
In a new Instagram post, Kenworthy said there had been a lot of “encouraging” support but he had also received death threats.
“A few days ago I posted a photo with my thoughts on ICE, and since then that photo has gone everywhere — I’ve received a ton of messages and most of them have been honestly supportive and encouraging,” Kenworthy said in a video., external
“But a lot of the messages were terrible, people telling me to kill myself, threatening me, wishing to see me hit my knee or break my neck during the event, calling me insults… It’s crazy.”
Kenworthy will compete in the men’s snowboard halfpipe, with qualifying starting on February 19 in Livigno, Italy.
Protests have erupted across the United States over the past few weeks after intensive care nurse Alex Pretty, 37, and fellow Minnesota resident Renee Judd, 37, were killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the city in January.
