Chelsea coach Sonia Bombastor has confirmed that goalkeeper Hannah Hampton will be out for a “few weeks” due to a quad injury.
England national team player Hampton was injured during the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday and was excluded from the Blues squad that won 6-0 over Austrian team St. Pölten on Tuesday.
“We’ll see if we can see it before the end of the year, but I’m not sure,” Bombastor said on Friday.
Asked if Hampton was likely to miss England’s upcoming friendlies against China on November 29 and Ghana on December 2, the Chelsea manager replied: “Yes, it could be the case. Yes.”
The 24-year-old’s injury comes amid controversy over comments made by former England goalkeeper Mary Earps in her autobiography.
Earps, who was dropped by Lionesses boss Sarina Wegman in favor of Hampton ahead of the 2025 European Championships, described Hampton as a “disruptive and unreliable” character.
In response to the comments, Bombastor backed her goalkeeper Hampton, saying she showed “class” and that she felt Earps disrespected Wegman.
Hampton was replaced in goal by Swiss goalkeeper Livia Bing in Chelsea’s midweek Women’s Champions League win.
Chelsea, who will face Liverpool on Sunday, ranks second in the Women’s Premier League, one point behind leaders Manchester City.
