The “take for granted” aspect of Carrick’s answer was clear.
The former United and England midfielder knows the sacrifices needed to excel at the highest levels of the game. He also knows the demands that are placed on players’ bodies.
Mental strength is also key.
Beyond his ability, it is this kind of attitude that has seen him present himself for Burnley, and what makes Maguire so valuable to United.
Which is why, as they head into a summer in which Casemiro’s vast experience will be lost, it is to be welcomed that multiple sources with an understanding of the situation believe a solution will eventually be found to Maguire’s contractual situation which will allow him to remain at Manchester United for at least next season.
Nothing has been agreed yet. Until that happens, there remains the possibility that Maguire will agree to a deal with another club – which he is entitled to under freedom of contract regulations – or back away from United.
But the mood music is upbeat.
A compromise is likely to be needed, on both wages – Maguire is one of United’s highest-paid players and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined to cut costs – and perhaps the length of the contract.
But through Burnley, Brighton, City and Maguire played in every minute of the four-game winning streak that Carrick began his spell as manager.
The England defender has shown just how valuable he is as Matthijs de Ligt remains out for an indefinite period due to a back injury, with no immediate sign of a return.
Maguire isn’t just experienced and calm. His communications are also crucial. He is demanding of those around him and is not afraid to tell his colleagues when they fall short of the standards he expects.
His central defensive partnership with Lisandro Martinez has a familiarity about it too, which is a bit surprising given the pair have started together just 16 times at the heart of a two-man defense since the Argentina international joined Old Trafford from Ajax in 2022.
The reasons for this are many. The formation of Amorim in the beginning. Before that, Erik ten Hag clearly didn’t feel Maguire was the type of player he wanted, while Martinez had suffered some serious injuries.
There is also the knowledge that their first two games together were defeats to Brighton and Brentford which began the Ten Hag era.
They won 11 of the next 14 games they started, suggesting that staying fit could be key to United’s bid to qualify for the Champions League.
