Football journalist David McIntyre, who has covered QPR for 26 years, says Vale’s versatility and ability on the ball could make him a great fit for the Republic of Ireland.

“He’s left-handed and can play on the wing, left-back, midfield or as a 10-man position behind the striker,” McIntyre said.

“Lately, he’s been playing on the right side so he can tackle on his left foot. He’s very good at that. Most of his best moments with QPR have come from that position.

“He has a good range of passes and good execution of set-pieces. He doesn’t have serious speed but he is a determined runner and is certainly not slow.”

While Vale joined QPR from Chelsea, McIntyre admitted he had gone “under the radar” with the spotlight largely on strikers Richard Cooney and Romain Borel, who have scored 18 goals this season.

McIntyre added: “He’s definitely a good option for the Republic of Ireland. Solid Championship players like Josh Cullen have done well in this team and Vale fall into that category.”

“I can see why he’s got a place in the team. If they’re chasing a game, he can give them something, but he’s also classy and tidy in possession so he could be an option if you’re looking to close up shop.”
