Haunted hooks and chilling screams: How Chanel beads became the indie breakthrough of the year | music

AAt first Shane Lovers can’t pass. Then he makes a video call but I can’t talk. When we finally make a clear connection on the phone, I can hear him surrounded by nature, with faint bits of birdsong at the edge of his thoughtful, slightly raspy speech. The musician who performs in Chanel Beads (it’s still unclear even to its core members whether they’re a band or a solo project) is on location shooting a music video somewhere on the North Carolina coast. Confronting him as a disembodied voice, regardless of its competition with earthly warbling and chirping, seems somehow more appropriate than for most other musicians.

For many years, Lovers has focused on a mystical, panoramic sound that bounces from catchy, raucous rock to explosions of dissonant experimental noise. If the typical payoff of a pop song is to wrap a clear emotional arc in three-minute poetic chorus structures, the appeal of a Chanel Beads track is much more difficult. Previous singles like Ef, Police Scanner and Male Friendship flash in and out of focus, establishing a ground floor of groove, only for Lavers and his bandmates to turn it upside down with swelling strings, tinkling guitar and deafening samples. Lyrically, his songwriting clusters around an unstable emotional core so dense in his unspoken feelings that he manages to achieve a haunting kind of orbit. It’s Lovers’ great talent to handle all that swirling intensity while keeping everything hanging in the air.

Lovers’ complex, off-kilter music has made him a hero to the New York indie rock scene and to dozens of young Internet artists who are carving out their take on the genre with chaotic, finely tuned post-production. But it was his talent for writing huge anthems that gave the band much attention in the world of mainstream pop. Billie Eilish screams Chanel beads, Rosalía spreads her music, and last year she played the opening act on Lourdes’ Ultrasound World Tour. Although his subject matter remained serious and mysterious, Lovers’ increasingly accomplished records made him a major contender to be the next white boy in rock on the same path as Cameron Winter or Mk.gee.

In a sense, the band’s sophomore album, Your Day Will Come – not to be confused with their debut of the same name – is the complete culmination of their sound to date, and their biggest, boldest and most emotionally affecting recording to date. But even as their mission became clear, the band’s modus operandi remained as elusive as ever. If anything, Your Day Will Come is more certain about the way Chanel Beads handles massive uncertainty. “I think I lost some of the arrogant confidence of youth and adopted a greater confidence with others,” Lovers says. [the] Humility…never [capturing an idea] Exactly because it always eludes me. He pauses. “I’m a little more comfortable with the thing I’m trying to do being out of my grasp, maybe forever.”

“Pop music is more aggressive when it comes to feeling too big,” says Wendy Eisenberg, Lovers’ friend and former tour partner. “We go to pop concerts because the feeling is big enough to be handled by the group and I feel that way [Lavers] He has a real lock on it. He can transform everything he is [going through] To something that seems like a rallying cry for a lot of people who can’t yet say the exact same thing.

Chanel beads have already reached larger crowds and aroused feelings of deep appreciation. The move from small gigs, where it’s easier to play in a room, to full arenas was also met with interesting lapses between his sense of the music and that of his audience. “A lot of people will come up and say, ‘This music is so hopeful and makes me feel like things are going to be okay,'” he says, “and for me it feels the opposite.” I’m not surprised that people find Chanel Beads’ music reassuring. On a very superficial level, the effect of Lovers and co-vocalist Maya McGrory’s harmonies is sublime; their smooth vocals somehow manage to sound wide-eyed and world-weary at the same time.

But it is this hidden and underlying conflict that makes the band’s music land so powerfully. As a producer, Lavers has tremendous command of the sonic realm, such that the band’s larger-scale musical gestures become more impactful with the subtlest sonic details possible. The work he does on his laptop is often so radically different from the recording process that his collaborators are often amazed by the final product. “He really messes with all the stuff I record,” Zachary Paul, who plays strings and is the third regular member of the group, says with a laugh. “A lot of times, when I actually hear the finished song, I’m not sure who’s who and who’s who, and I’ll even ask, ‘Did you play that song?’ And sometimes I’m really surprised.

Lavers’ innovation also extends to the use of the band for sampling. About three-quarters of the way through the new song Outside Your Life, some stock sound of a man sobbing enters the mix in a way that seems to mimic and parody the catharsis of the lyrics. “I always think there could be a guitar solo here or there could be something working.” He loves “A guitar solo, but it has a kind of semiotic weight to it,” explains Lovers. “I’ve had this idea for a long time and it’s like a melody or anti-melody rather than a melody… What if it’s just a sound?… It’s like I’m going to cry here, let me hear the sound of crying.

Throughout our conversation, Lovers paused to think about his choice of words. He has an elliptical and open mind to the way he expresses himself, which is as generous to his listeners as it is a little maddening to a journalist. He’s not evasive or even picky. He’s a man – and a very straightforward one at that. But he’s also someone clearly attuned to the full weight of his words and how his certainty as an artist is underpinned by a shadow of doubt. In other respects, it is a black box, both for himself and for others. He does not easily attribute reasons for his feelings or share biographical details that are very personal. Lovers’ ability to distance himself from his center is remarkable given how beautifully he is able to capture the charged emotions of the tour.

The closest he comes to a profound personal revelation on record is the utterly devastating Tyler Richard. The song, which bears the first and middle name of the artist’s late brother, who died suddenly at the age of 19 from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, is about meeting a deceased loved one in his dreams. But their night presence is not reassuring, but rather painful. As Lovers wrestles with the boundaries of his grief, the song’s soaring musical progression is embedded in samples of harrowing screams. It’s unclear whether he pushed or retreated from the music’s turbulent, energetic emotions, but the song depicts how resolute one must be – as a person and an artist – to confront what hurts the most.

The mystery found in Chanel beads is not always laden with doom; Living in suspense also means living in hope. The other great dropper on the record is Silver Cup, the only track to feature McGrory on lead vocals. Its lyrics are incredibly poignant and reframe the mystery as reckless romantic suspense. “There’s a language for your soul/I give it everything I know and it’s hard to believe,” she sings over bright guitars, like a reassuring angel on his heavy shoulder.

“Maya and I have built our spiritual and psychological armor and made it strong, and I think the best part of our collaboration and relationship is just being able to… help me repair and strengthen that psychological armor, and vice versa,” Lovers says. On a record that deals with the deepest uncertainty, the certainty the members of Chanel Beads find in each other is all the more reason to believe in them.
