Two hundred serious suspects

The FBI was offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of the Unabomber. Its toll-free hotline, 1-800-701-BOMB, was established in 1993 and has received more than 50,000 reports. With all the new clues contained in the statement, the picture of the mysterious bomber became clearer. “It may have been the Unabomber’s arrogance that led to his downfall,” Guru Murthy said on BBC Newsnight. “In addition to the ideas contained in the letter, more was learned about the bomber’s academic background through his letters to prominent scholars.” The FBI’s UNABOM task force has compiled a list of 200 dangerous suspects. Five of them were placed under constant surveillance, all in Northern California where investigators believe he was hiding.

The breakthrough in this case came from an unexpected source: an American citizen vacationing in France with her husband, David Kaczynski. Linda Patrick, a philosophy professor, was reading a series of articles about the Unabomber in the International Herald Tribune, an English-language newspaper published in Paris. “Almost every day, I would look at these articles and scratch my head and say: ‘Wow, that kind of sounds like Dave’s brother,'” she told the BBC in 2016. One report mentioned the suspect’s carpentry skills. Another described his aversion to technology. Others listed cities where bombs had exploded, places where they knew David’s brother lived or worked. Taken together, she said, this pattern has become impossible to ignore. She had to ask him the awkward question: “You said, ‘Could it be that your brother was the bomber?’

Patrick said David couldn’t believe this could be true, but when he read the statement he was stunned. “Dave sat there looking at the computer screen,” she said. “I saw him reading the first page and his expression changed radically.” David told the BBC it was a terrifying scenario. “I was literally thinking about the possibility that my brother might be a serial killer, and he is the most wanted person in America, and perhaps in the whole world,” he said. The family’s dilemma was stark. If they remain silent, their inaction could lead to more carnage. But if Ted proves to be the bomber, he could face the death penalty. David said, “What would it be like to spend the rest of my life with my brother’s blood on my hands?”
