How Archie Gray has proven to be a shining light in a season of turmoil at Tottenham

His ability to shine in so many different roles suggests a natural feel for the game – something former England international midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who was also frequently used as a right-back, picked up on in his analysis of Gray’s performance against Atletico.

“When he wants, he can play fast,” he told TNT Sports. “I think sometimes, in these games, players take too many touches. Archie did everything very quickly, and I thought he was incredibly effective.”

Like Hargreaves, Gray is likely to play for a number of countries at international level.

Although his grandfather Frank and great-uncle Eddie both represented Scotland, Gray has chosen for England, although he has yet to feature for the Three Lions. A final decision will have to be made on his international allegiance soon if he continues like this, with a recall likely to follow.

However, at the moment, the focus cannot shift away from Tottenham and the focus that will be necessary to shake off the relegation problem. Gray, perhaps more than anyone else in the Spurs squad, appears ready to face that battle head-on.
