Of course, that wasn’t the only factor in Rangers’ turnaround, but appointing Scott Fry as set-piece coach in November was a smart decision.
His former club Lincoln City scored 30 goals from set-pieces last season, the most in the Championship, and his experience has been evident since his move north of the border.
When Rangers win a free kick or corner kick, Rühl withdraws from the touchline, and Fry comes out and increasingly takes charge.
In a league where many teams often compete against top clubs, small margins are vital and Rangers have scored seven league goals from corner kicks in 10 games since Fry’s appointment.
Tall defender Emmanuel Fernandes – who was a bit player in the early stages of the season – was used to great effect, scoring four goals in the league, three of them in matches the team won by one goal.
Only Dundee United and Hearts have scored more goals from set-pieces than Rangers (12) this season and no team has bettered the Ibrox side in that statistic since Fry’s arrival.
In fact, they are now just one goal away from the number of goals they scored from set-pieces in the previous two seasons.
Aberdeen could have traveled to Glasgow on Tuesday well aware of the dangers Rangers now pose, but Fernandes and Nicholas Raskin scored from Conor Barron’s swinging corners and Ruhl’s side picked up another three valuable points.
This seems like an obvious way to get an edge on the competition, but Rangers are doing it better than anyone at the moment.
