So why do Benham and Brentford keep getting things right?

The decision to appoint Andrews sums things up neatly.

Externally, it was seen as a high-risk move, but internally it was seen as one of the lower risk options.

Club sources are afraid to shout about their success from the rooftops because nothing is certain in football, but their thinking about Andrews taking over was very strong.

First, he was already in the club. The senior staff knew him, knew his strengths and weaknesses and what they were likely to get. He knew them. He understood the club model and actually joined it.

What Brentford don’t want is a new manager coming to the club and starting telling everyone what they consider to be the best way to run the club.

Brentford have an established model that has brought them success. There was no desire or intention to depart from it. Andrews’ presence at the helm brought continuity that protected against dramatic collapse.

This is not to say that Andrews’ presence is of no importance. On the contrary, the belief is that he did an excellent job, and if he had not, the evidence would be clear.

However, he got into an established machine.

Compare that with Frank at Tottenham, who was followed by Ange Postecoglou, Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho.

It’s fair to ask whether all of these individuals failed because of mistakes they made – or whether they struggled because of a lack of a broader strategy, given that the five men approach the game differently?

The outlook at Brentford – who host Brighton on Sunday – is also very different compared to Tottenham.

Frank took charge of a team that had just won a major European competition and had ambitions to return to the form that had produced 11 top-five finishes in the previous 16 seasons.

Brentford, under contract, are already operating at a higher level than they have been for almost their entire existence.

No club should be affected by external noise, but it is easier when the messages received are supportive rather than hostile.

Even after a difficult start to the season, when Brentford collected just four points from their first five games and were sitting in 17th place, fans were thinking of trusting those running the club rather than taking their anger out on them.

Maybe this is common sense.

But if it were that easy, everyone would do it. Isn’t it?
