Huddersfield Giants: The Premier League side sacks coach Luke Robinson

Huddersfield Giants have sacked manager Luke Robinson after a poor start to the 2026 Premier League season.

The Giants lost all of their first five matches, leaving them without a point and bottom of the table.

Robinson, a 41-year-old former England international, played 228 matches for Huddersfield as a player, and was in his second spell as coach of the club.

Huddersfield’s director of change, Ralph Rimmer, told the club’s website: “We have reset the club. We started that before Christmas and have pushed forward off the field, but crucially we need some success on the pitch as well.”, external

“A wonderful man, Luke Robinson, a legend of this club and will continue to be so, but nevertheless these circumstances have led to this change.”

Robinson became Giants manager for a second time in September 2024, replacing Ian Watson, and lost his first nine games before finally tasting success with a narrow win over Hull FC at Magic Weekend last May.

Due to financial constraints, Robinson eventually led the club to tenth place in the final Super League standings last year.

This season, he has had to deal with a number of injuries to key players, including star full-back George Flanagan Jr, one of 16 members of the first-team squad who were unavailable during an injury crisis that the club described as “unprecedented” earlier this month.

Robinson continued to look like a desperate figure after his team’s defeat against the Bradford Bulls on Friday evening, which ended up being his last match with the team.

He previously served, but briefly, as the Giants’ interim head coach during the end of the COVID-impacted 2020 season following the resignation of Simon Wolford, taking charge of the final eight games of the season.

Director of Rugby Andy Kelly will lead the first team until Robinson’s successor is appointed.
