Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the most admired broadcasters in the industry, bringing the joy of classical music to the general public. He was Head of Music and Arts at the BBC during the 1960s and 1970s, and went on to win awards for programs such as The Golden Ring. He also launched the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award in 1978, which discovered soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
BBC Radio 3 said in a post on social media that it was saddened by the news, adding: “He was a much-loved classical music broadcaster who had a huge influence on generations of arts program makers. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Sam Jackson, controller of BBC Radio 3 and the BBC Proms, said: “Very sad news – but what a life and what a legacy. I consider myself very lucky to have produced some radio programs with Humphrey, at that time. A man full of grace, warmth and wonderful tales. Thinking of his family at this time.”
The Royal Philharmonic Society, of which Burton was an honorary member, also paid tribute to the broadcaster, saying: “Few have done so much to herald the wonders of classical music. In his many television programs and live writings, he set a gold standard for us all to uphold, engaging millions in music.”
Burton was a frequent collaborator with Yehudi Menuhin and Leonard Bernstein, whose biography he wrote. He was also a presenter for Classic FM, where he worked on series about Menuhin and Bernstein. Paying tribute to him, Classic FM said: “Through these radio programs and his writings, he introduced multiple generations to classical music with the trademark enthusiasm that made his name synonymous with arts broadcasting.”
In a statement to the radio station, Burton’s family said: “He was deeply loved by his children and grandchildren, and his commitment to spreading the joy of classical music was deeply inspiring. An award-winning writer, producer and filmmaker who had a huge influence on several generations of arts program makers, he was also a former presenter on Classic FM. He will be missed beyond words. We are comforted to know that he is now at peace.”
Burton was also a founder member of London Weekend Television, where he edited and presented Aquarius. His awards include three British Academy Awards and four Emmy Awards. He was knighted in the New Year Honors 2020 for services to classical music and the arts.
In his 2021 autobiography, In My Own Time, Burton said he would like the BBC to take a risk on new music programming as he lamented the BBC audience’s loss of Young Musician of the Year.
