Hydro will host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer, with organizers promising a “Clyde-style experience for the world”.
About 700 volunteer staff members will be recruited for the event on July 23, with dancers, theater artists, musicians and “all-around performers” invited to apply., external Before the deadline of April 24.
The ceremony will be the first of its kind at a Games to be held in an arena rather than an outdoor stadium, and is “designed to be experienced, not observed,” says Louisa Mahon, creative lead for Glasgow 2026 celebrations.
She will oversee a team that includes show and stage director Roxanna Cole, choreographer Emily Jane Boyle and costume designer Carol Millar.
“We are working with some amazing female creatives to build a bold, unmistakable ceremony in Glasgow and unlike anything the Commonwealth Games has produced before,” Mahon adds.
The minimum age to volunteer is 16, no previous experience is required, and “passionate people from all backgrounds” are encouraged to apply in order to “showcase the city’s local communities and cultures.”
The deadline of 24 April can be brought forward if demand is high, with auditions taking place in Glasgow from 9 to 10 May.
Glasgow 2026 will take place from 23 July to 2 August, with more than 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories competing in 10 sports and six Paralympic sports.
When the Games were last held in the city in 2014, the opening ceremony was held at Celtic Park.
