📌 Main takeaway:
Daniel Radcliffe is set to star in the Broadway premiere of Every Brilliant Thing, a one-man play that poignantly addresses depression. The actor, who won a Tony Award last year for his performance in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrly We Roll Along, will perform at the Hudson Theater in New York, from February 21 to May 24, 2026.
The play, written by Duncan MacMillan, alongside original show star Johnny Donahue, has been a huge hit in London’s West End, where it is currently running at @sohoplace by Minnie Driver until 8 November. Described by The Guardian as “both heartfelt and hilarious”, it revolves around a child’s reaction to his mother’s attempted suicide. Determined to help her, they made a list of all the things that make life worth living – while encouraging the audience to join them by citing the reasons listed. As the child becomes an adult, the list continues to evolve, although it is now the adults who need reasons to remain optimistic.
The play debuted at the Edinburgh Playhouse in 2014 and has since become a global phenomenon, having been performed in over 80 countries. Since Donahue first stopped performing in 2017, the role has been taken over by Sue Perkins, Lenny Henry, Ambika Maude and others.
The structure of the play allows it to be tailored to specific audiences. When Melina Theo starred in the Greek premiere, the script was filled with references to Greek popular culture from the 1990s. A reference to a particular brand of ice cream was included in Oliver Chung’s performance in Singapore.
This will be the latest Broadway role for Radcliffe who has previously performed in The Lifespan of a Fact, Privacy and The Cripple of Inishmaan, as well as the record-breaking run in Merrily We Roll Along. The actor, who rose to fame as a child in the Harry Potter films, made his stage debut in 2007, playing opposite Richard Griffiths in Peter Shaffer’s Equus.
“When Daniel told us how much he loved the play, I was so thrilled,” McMillan said. “He has the intelligence, quick wit and charm to adapt to the spontaneous moments the show calls for – he can be a clown one moment, and then grab you from your core the next. He has so much depth and humanity. I can’t wait to get started.”
