Russell Martin has no regrets about his tumultuous time as Rangers manager and says the abuse he received was tough on those close to him.

Martin (40 years old) was sacked after Rangers’ first seven matches in the Scottish Premier League this season, where the team ranks eighth in the standings.

He won five matches, drew six and lost six of his matches overall. Only one victory for Martin came in the league, with his fifth Premier League draw against Falkirk proving to be his last game in charge.

Rangers also crashed out of the Champions League with a 9-3 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge, having beaten Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzeň in the previous qualifying rounds.

“I don’t regret anything,” Martin told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club programme.

He added: “There is a lot of frustration for me as a coach, manager and leader, but in the end, the fault is always yours as a manager.

“It’s my fault that I didn’t do a good enough job, and you learn from it, and I will definitely be better.”

Martin came under mounting pressure before his exit in October and described his 123-day reign as “character building”.

“I love Glasgow as a city,” the former Rangers and Scotland defender said. “I loved living there.

“It was really hard for the people around me – family and friends. When my kids came, they couldn’t attend the match because of the level of abuse I was receiving at that point.”
