With the Premier League title seemingly beyond their reach, Chelsea’s priority is to secure third place and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Rivals Arsenal and Manchester United did their part earlier in the weekend, so Chelsea had to respond.
Tottenham, who started the match one point behind Chelsea, were running out of shots and could have taken the lead when Olivia Holdt hit the crossbar.
A nervous Chelsea were in a battle until Keira Walsh’s goal just before half-time rocked Tottenham and put the Blues in the driving seat. He was the “game changer” they needed.
“When you want to perform at your best, you need the four elements of performance to be aligned at the highest level – tactical, mental, physical and technical,” Bombastor said.
“If one or some of them are not at the highest possible level, it affects the performance. We were a different team in the second half. This is what we want to be.”
Bombastor’s actions on Sunday were deliberate. After warming up, she took to the court and greeted each member of her team.
She celebrated with assistant coach Mylène Gerrard, who lifted her and twirled her around the pitch, when Walsh’s goal put Chelsea 1-0 ahead, something she rarely does, but then said she should do more.
Under normal circumstances, a win over Tottenham would have been considered ordinary. But these three points gave Chelsea a big boost.
“I’m going to enjoy it. I’m not going to lie, it’s been a tough time. It’s been tough so we need to celebrate with the players and staff,” Bombastor said.
“We know that when we are at Chelsea we need to win every game and we want to be as dominant as possible. To do that, we need to get the points to win.
“We still have a lot to play for. We know what we can improve.”
