Gary Cahill has weighed in on Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his costly errors in the 3-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday (March 21). The loss marked the Blues’ fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s season has started well, but his recent decline in form has become a major cause for concern. The Blues have conceded 12 goals in their last four matches across competitions, while also going 15 straight games without keeping a clean sheet. Sanchez had a poor performance against Everton, including a huge error that resulted in one of Beto’s shots going through his legs and into the net.

In a chat on Sky Sports, Gary Cahill spoke about Robert Sanchez’s recent form for Chelsea after the loss to Everton. He said:
“Sanchez? I supported him, I was the one who supported him. I think he has character; he can play from the back, and sometimes he is a great shot-stopper. I am ready for him to stop making these mistakes, and mistakes are obviously costly at the moment. He will be disappointed, he knows, you know he is a professional goalkeeper. He will know in these moments that he has to do better.”
If Sanchez’s form does not improve for the rest of the season, Chelsea will have to consider their options to solve the problem. The Blues’ second goalkeeper, Filip Jorgensen, is currently absent due to a thigh injury. They could also search the market for a better prospect this summer to replace Sanchez.
Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior backs Robert Sanchez despite crucial errors in the 3-0 loss to Everton

In the press conference following the match, Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior supported Robert Sanchez despite his poor performance throughout the match. Beto succeeded in passing the ball to the Spaniard to score his second goal of the match against the Blues. He said (NBC Sports):
“It’s very difficult to talk quickly after the match about individual performances. Rob is a top goalkeeper and they have days like that. Pickford made a great save. Now is not the time to talk. It’s the time for me and my staff to analyse. The players leave and when they come back we will have a clear few weeks to really work with the boys. There is no lack of effort, the players are trying.”
While Sanchez performed poorly, the backline also failed to perform, with the likes of Mark Cucurella and Wesley Fofana having poor performances. The Blues will next face Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals (April 4), before taking on Manchester City in the Premier League (April 12) after the international break.
