Ben Mayes achieved the highest score by an England youth player, smashing 191 in the Under-19 World Cup group stage match against Scotland in Harare.
Hampshire’s 18-year-old Mayes was one point shy of the tournament’s record total of 192 points set by Sri Lanka’s Viran Chamuditha against Japan four days ago.
The right-hander, who was batting at number three, smashed 18 fours and eight sixes in a 117-ball knock.
He was well supported by Lancashire’s Joe Morris – nephew of former England coach Peter – who hit 81 off 65 balls in a second-wicket stand of 188.
Mayes takes the national record from Dan Lawrence, who scored 174 for England against Fiji in 2016.
The highest score in a full one-day international for England is Ben Stokes’ 182 against New Zealand in 2023.
England finished with a score of 404-6, the seventh highest total in the history of the tournament and the first time England had surpassed 400 runs.
Scotland were bowled out for just 152 in reply, with Finley Carter (34) the only batsman offering any real resistance.
Middlesex all-rounder Caleb Falconer added to his tally of 32 with the bat with 3-19 to send England into the Super Sixes stage with a 100% record.
