South Africa registered a historic red-ball victory on Indian soil after 15 years after registering a 30-run victory in the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on day three, Sunday 16 November. The Proteas grabbed a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after defending a 124-run target on a slick pitch.

Left-arm pacer Marko Janssen dismissed both openers in the final innings before the spinners took over to dismantle the entire Indian batting unit. Without injured skipper Shubman Gill, the Men in Blue struggled to have a say in the run chase. Off-spinner Simon Harmer led the charge with four wickets to pull India out from just 93 runs and register a memorable victory for the visiting team.

Ahead of the competition, South Africa sat fourth in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings with 50 points after a recent 1-1 draw with Pakistan. This historic win now moves them to second place in the table with a PCT improvement of 66 after three matches played. Australia still tops the world rankings with an unblemished record following their clean sweep of the West Indies two months ago.

India, on the other hand, finished third in the WTC standings with a PCT of 61.90 after the results of the series against England and West Indies. However, the latest loss hurt them significantly, as they dropped to fourth place, with their PCT rating deteriorating to 54.17. Sri Lanka, after a 1-0 win over Bangladesh, now sits in third place with a PCT score of 66.67.

The Men in Blue have played eight Tests this tournament so far, winning four, losing three and drawing one.

Team India will face South Africa in the second Test in Guwahati from November 22 onwards

The Men in Blue are now under enormous pressure to avoid a second home series loss in just over a year when they take on the Proteas in the second and final Test of the series.

Team India has additional concerns ahead of the competition, with skipper Shubman Gill a doubt for the contest due to a neck injury he suffered on day two of the opening series.

The competition is scheduled to begin from Saturday, November 22 at the Barsabara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. This will be the first time the venue has hosted a Test match.
