Iga Swiatek: Six-time major winner with trainer Wim Fisset after an early exit from the Miami Open

With the trophy tucked under one arm and a microphone attached to the other, Swiatek’s first act as Wimbledon champion was to applaud Fissette’s input.

Improving her inner belief by focusing on footwork and strengthening her serve was key. But putting everything together across the entire tournament proved to be the exception rather than the rule.

A natural introvert, Swiatek plays her best when she is clear and confident, waiting for opportunities to punish her opponents from the baseline.

Fissette’s attempt to develop her style over the past 18 months has often left Swiatek increasingly stressed when things don’t go her way.

Feeling disoriented led to extreme fluctuations in her form and led to careless errors rather than her previously reliable groundstrokes.

After one of the most painful losses of her career in Miami, Swiatek spoke about feeling “disoriented” on the court and how the game had become “complicated” in her head.

She appeared to be a desperate person when she spoke to reporters – and her demeanor suggested a change was coming at the training ground.

The rest of her team – psychologist Daria Abramović, physiotherapist Maciej Ryszczuk and striking partner Tomek Muchek – remain in place.

Some wonder whether Abramović – who has been alongside Swiatek in each of her Grand Slam wins – needs to be more responsible given the player’s problems arise from her mentality on court.

The quick move to drop Fisette offers the opportunity to reset, and perhaps go back to basics, before four-time French Open champion Swiatek attempts to reclaim her ‘Queen of Clay’ title in the next phase of the season.

Ideally, Swiatek would like to appoint a new coach when she returns to the Stuttgart Open Tour, which starts on April 13, and has opened talks with unnamed candidates.
