Former British runner Rhys Prescod has said he will not take performance-enhancing drugs despite taking part in the controversial Enhanced Games.
The competition, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas in May, will allow athletes to take substances banned in mainstream sports, under medical supervision.
The 29-year-old, who retired last year, is the fourth fastest British man in the 100m, with a personal best of 9.93 seconds.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World at One programme, Prescod answered “no” when asked if he had taken any drugs yet.
Asked “But will you?” He replied again: “No.”
He added: “Obviously it is always medically confidential, but I think my priority now is to get back to below 10.”
The improved Games have been criticized for endangering athletes’ health and undermining fair play, with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) calling it a “dangerous and irresponsible enterprise”.
Only US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved materials may be taken. This is a different list than the list that WADA allows for elite athletes.
UK Athletics chief executive Jack Buckner said he was “appalled” when Prescod’s signing was revealed earlier in January.
