Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is recovering well in hospital after suffering a ruptured spleen while injured in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday.
Ayer, injured while playing at 34, ran back to catch an Alex Curry sack and landed awkwardly on his side.
The 30-year-old immediately clung to his side and received treatment on the field before being taken to the hospital.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not set a timetable for his return but has confirmed that he is “medically stable”.
“Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury to the lower left rib cage area while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. He was taken to hospital for further evaluation,” BCCI said in a statement on Monday.
He added: “X-rays showed a rupture in the spleen. He is undergoing treatment, and his condition is medically stable, and he is recovering well.”
“The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring the condition of his injury. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his daily progress.”
India went on to win the match by nine wickets but lost the series 2-1.
The five-match T20 series between the two sides begins in Canberra on Wednesday.
