South Africa are on the verge of registering a first Test series win in India in 25 years after reducing the hosts to 27-2 in pursuit of 549 on day four in Guwahati.

India, who were tipped for 201 in their first innings, must bat throughout the final day to avoid a second whitewash in three home Test series.

Before the 3-0 defeat to New Zealand last October, they had not lost a Test series at home for 12 years.

South Africa won the opening match of the two-Test series in Kolkata by 30 runs.

Resuming 26-0, South Africa staggered to 77-3, losing three wickets for 18 runs in a 13-over period, before Tristan Stubbs took over.

He top-scored with 94, shared a century partnership with Tony De Zorzi and added a further 82 runs alongside Jan Mulder to extend South Africa’s overnight lead of 314 to over 500.

He missed his third Test century when he bowled a slower ball off spinner Ravindra Jadeja (4-62), prompting South Africa to declare.

In reply, India lost two wickets in 10 overs, with Yashavi Jaiswal caught behind Marco Janssen and KL Rahul bowled by Simon Harmer.

Kuldeep Yadav, who faced 134 deliveries for 19 in the first innings, was sent in as night watch and was not out for four at stumps. Sai Sudarsan has six.
