India faces an uphill battle if it wants to avoid another defeat in the home Test series after South Africa made 489 on the second day of the second Test in Guwahati.
Senoran Muthusamy scored his maiden Test century and fellow all-rounder Marko Janssen scored a career-best 93 as the lower order Proteas, who took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, frustrated the hosts by keeping them on the field for most of the day.
Resuming 25 not out, Muthusamy shared a stand of 88 with Verreynne and 97 with Jansen before being dismissed for 109 off 206 balls.
While Muthusamy was leading, Janssen kept scoring by hitting seven sixes in a 91-ball knock.
No team has bowled as many runs in the first innings of a Test in India and lost the match.
India’s frustration was compounded by the umpires taking players off due to poor lighting just 6.1 minutes after their reply. They were 9-0.
India went 12 years without losing a Test series at home until they were beaten 3-0 by New Zealand last year.
Although they beat the West Indies 2-0 in October, failure to turn that Test around would mean a second home series defeat in just over 12 months.
