Jack Draper will continue his Indian Wells title defense against Novak Djokovic after an impressive win on Monday – while Cameron Norrie claimed a huge win in the third round.
British top seed Draper defeated Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, ranked 20th in the world, 6-1, 7-5, to set up a match in the round of 16 with Djokovic, winner of 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic, ranked third in the world, defeated American Alexander Kovacevic 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to continue his campaign.
British second seed Nouri also qualified for the fourth round by defeating Australian Alex de Minaur, sixth seed, 6-4, 6-4.
Draper, ranked 14th in the world, performed stronger against Cerundolo than he did during his second-round victory over Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
The 24-year-old, playing his second singles tournament since the US Open last year after recovering from an arm injury, claimed the first set within 32 minutes after serving Cerundolo three times.
Cerundolo provided a tougher test in the second set as he broke Draper’s serve in the opener.
Another break of serve gave Cerundolo an opportunity to serve in the set while leading 5-4, but Draper fought back and prevailed in the next three games to achieve victory on the first match point.
Nouri and Draper’s victory came one day after their British compatriot Emma Raducano was defeated by American Amanda Anisimova, where they won only two matches and were eliminated in 52 minutes.
Nouri is seeded 27th in the men’s draw but played above that position as he took three breaks en route to victory over De Minaur. His next opponent will be Australian Rinki Hijikata, who beat Kazakhstan’s 10th seed Alexander Bublik in three sets.
