Fourteen-year-old Chinese amateur Wang Xinzong almost caused a major upset against Sean Murphy before the Masters champion prevailed in the deciding frame of his second-round match at the international tournament.
Murphy, the 2005 world champion, trailed 5-4 but won the last two frames with breaks of 72 and 89 to set up a third-round match with fellow Englishman Elliot Slessor.
Murphy, ranked ninth in the world, led 3-0, but Wang equalized the score by winning the next three frames with breaks of 81, 100 and 58.
The teenager made another century on his way to taking the lead for the first time and had the chance to seal the victory in the 10th frame but missed a black point from his spot early on.
Murphy capitalized and made two frame-winning contributions to secure the victory.
Wang, who received a wildcard to the event, beat women’s world champion Bai Yulu and world number 53 Robbie Williams on Sunday to reach the second round in Nanjing, China.
He appeared in the international tournament in 2023, aged 12, and lost 6-0 in the second round to Judd Trump on that occasion.
