📌 Here’s what you’ll learn:

Intuit has signed a multi-year contract worth more than $100 million with OpenAI, enabling its tax and finance applications to run within ChatGPT and expanding the company’s use of OpenAI models across its products.

Intuit said its tools, such as TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks and Mailchimp, will be accessible through ChatGPT, allowing users to ask questions and complete tasks such as estimating a tax refund, reviewing credit options or managing business finances.

With users’ permission, Intuit apps will be able to access their financial data to create responses and complete tasks, such as sending marketing messages or issuing bill reminders. Customers will also be able to use tools within ChatGPT to review credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages.

The agreement reflects a broader trend of technology and financial companies adopting broad language models in consumer and business software. In October, OpenAI introduced a way to let developers build applications accessible through ChatGPT. Early participants in the program included Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, and several other consumer and productivity platforms.

But Intuit’s integration is different from existing ChatGPT implementations, as it will be used for tasks that can directly impact financial decisions. Such uses have raised concerns about the reliability of AI systems, which can produce incorrect or misleading outputs.

Intuit uses multiple verification methods and uses large, domain-specific datasets to reduce the risk of errors or “hallucinogenic” responses, Intuit spokesman Bruce Chan told TechCrunch.

“When our AI provides an answer or guidance to a customer, it draws on the deep expertise that Intuit has developed over many years, combined with data that gives us a 360-degree view of the customer,” Chan said. “This helps ensure that the answer provided is relevant, grounded in the customer’s own data, and reflects Intuit’s years of experience in this area.”

Chan said Intuit continues to stand by the accuracy guarantees offered through its products, including TurboTax, but did not clarify when asked whether the company or customer would be on the hook for errors resulting from AI-generated recommendations or insights.

Intuit has expanded its use of artificial intelligence in recent years, aiming to leverage its big data infrastructure. In 2023, the company introduced Intuit Assist, an AI assistant that runs across its products.

The partnership also sees Intuit expand its use of OpenAI models across its business. The company already uses OpenAI’s AI models alongside other large commercial and open source language models. Intuit said the partnership will allow it to reach new audiences through ChatGPT, adding another distribution channel for small business and consumer financing tools.

“This partnership will deepen Intuit’s use of leading OpenAI models, which will help power selected AI agents across the Intuit platform,” Chan said.

The deal also covers Intuit’s continued use of ChatGPT Enterprise, which the company said has been deployed internally to support employee workflows.
