DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s top diplomat was heading Sunday from Tehran to Geneva, where the second round of nuclear negotiations with the United States will be held, Iranian state media reported.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his accompanying delegation left for the Swiss city after the first round of indirect talks that took place in Amman last week. The official Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported on its Telegram channel that Oman will mediate the talks in Geneva.

Similar talks collapsed last year after Israel launched what became a 12-day war on Iran, which included US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to use force to force Iran to agree to restrict its nuclear program. Iran said it would respond with an attack of its own. Trump also threatened Iran over its deadly crackdown on recent protests across the country.

The Gulf Arab states warned that any attack could turn into another regional conflict.

The Trump administration has confirmed that Iran cannot enrich uranium under any detail, which Tehran says it will not agree to.

Iran continues to insist that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but officials are increasingly threatening to seek a nuclear weapon. Before the war in June, Iran was enriching uranium to 60% purity, a short technical step away from the levels needed to produce nuclear weapons.

Araghchi is also expected to meet with his Swiss and Omani counterparts, as well as the Director General of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency.

Earlier on Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington remains interested in reaching a diplomatic solution to end its differences with Tehran, and that President Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are currently traveling to attend the new round of talks.

Trump said on Friday that the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, was being sent from the Caribbean to the Middle East to join other military assets the United States has established in the region. He also said that a change of power in Iran “would be the best thing that could happen.”

Rubio said the recent military deployments to the Middle East were a preventive measure aimed at strengthening the defenses of US facilities and interests. Iran threatened to attack American bases in the region if Washington decided to attack. In June, Tehran attacked Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, although no American or Qatari employees were harmed.

“No one has been able to reach a successful agreement with Iran, but we will try,” Rubio said in a press conference after his meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava. “We are focused on negotiations.” Trump has indicated in recent weeks that his priority is for Iran to reduce its nuclear program, while Iran has said it wants the talks to focus solely on the nuclear program. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met with Trump in Washington earlier this week, is pressing for an agreement that would neutralize Iran’s ballistic missile program and end its funding of proxy groups such as Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
