✅ Main takeaway:
Ireland coach Andy Farrell said “you have to be careful what you say” but did not understand how the match officials raised the yellow card.
After a delay in showing the images on the big screen at Solider Field, home of the Chicago Bears, match referee Pierre Brosset and his assistants looked at the incident on a small screen on the side of the field.
Foul play review official Dan Jones Brossett recommended that it should be upgraded to a 20-minute red card.
Ian Henderson was introduced to return Ireland to full courtesy after 20 minutes, and Ireland led 10-7 at half-time before New Zealand took the lead in the closing stages.
Byrne will now face a disciplinary hearing and any further action could see him excluded from Ireland’s remaining autumn matches against Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa.
“I’m in favor of the safest way forward in this game, so you have to be careful what you say in that regard,” Farrell said.
“But to me, if you look at it in real time, I don’t know how it got to that.
“They obviously have their reasons, and I’m not privy to that.”
Farrell also felt that it should have been reviewed at full speed and not in slow motion replay.
“You can look at it from all angles, but the only way to look at it is in real time.
“It doesn’t matter anymore, does it? We got a red card, and we handled it well to be fair.”
