Ireland captain Cailan Doris says his side are “nowhere close” to reaching their full potential as they prepare to face Wales after a record win away to England.
Andy Farrell’s side will hope to beat Wales in Dublin on Friday (20:10 GMT) and set up a Six Nations Triple Crown decider at home to Scotland on March 14.
But Doris insists Ireland still have plenty of work to do despite scoring a record 42 points away to England two weeks ago in an impressive performance.
“Obviously there’s a positive feeling after a good performance like that, but it’s about the bigger picture, it’s about continuing to grow,” Doris said.
“We know we are nowhere near our potential as a team, there is a lot of hard work to do, and we still have a long journey to go.
“It’s been a return to hard work, a return to the lessons learned from the game, which there have been some, as well as some good ones. It’s just a matter of building on them.”
“We have a very clear plan about where we want to go in terms of structures and the way we want to play, and it’s about chasing that week after week.”
Ireland are favorites to secure a fifth successive win at home to Wales and condemn Steve Tandy’s side to a 15th successive loss in the tournament.
However, Wales produced an encouraging performance against Scotland in a game in which they led for 65 minutes but lost 26-23.
Having opened the season with a heavy defeat to England, Doris says Wales are clearly improving and insists complacency will not be an issue for Ireland at a sold-out Aviva Stadium.
“I think they improved throughout the tournament,” Doris added.
“You could see the game going forward on the pitch. They obviously put things up against Scotland in the last game. They started well.
“They’ve obviously invested a lot of time in their attack. It’s a good attack and it’s going to be a challenge for our defence.
“I’m sure in camp they took a lot of positives from that (Scotland) game.”
