The third day of Ireland’s second Test in Bangladesh has been temporarily halted due to an earthquake.

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, on Friday morning.

According to Reuters, the government in Bangladesh said that at least five people were killed and about 100 others were injured.

Ireland were at the crease and the players remained on the field at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium when the earthquake struck.

Coaches and non-participating players gathered at the border, while those present took shelter in the stands.

The match was stopped for three minutes but play soon resumed and Ireland began chasing Bangladesh’s total of 476.

Despite a Fourth Test half-century from Lorcan Tucker and a 49 from Jordan Neil, Ireland, who were 98-5 at the close of play on Thursday, were all out for 265 but Najm Hussain Shanto chose not to force the follow-on and the hosts returned to the crease.

Shadman Islam’s unbeaten 69 and 60 off Mahmud Hasan Joy, dismissed by Gavin Hoey, moved Bangladesh 367 runs clear, with nine more wickets remaining.

The hosts will be looking to wrap up the second Test and seal a 2-0 series victory on Saturday with Shaman Islam and Mominul Haque at the crease.

Bangladesh won the first Test between the two sides by an innings and 47 runs. The two-game series will be followed by three T20 internationals.
