The Irish Rugby Football Union has been forced to suspend comments on a social media post congratulating new signing Edwin Edogbo, following responses that included racist abuse.
Munster forward Edogbo came off the bench and played the final 10 minutes of Saturday’s 20-13 win over Italy in the Six Nations.
The IRFU confirmed in a statement that comments made on the social media post on Saturday are now under investigation.
The IRFU’s full statement said: “We are aware of some targeted online breaches in recent days and continue to work with Signify and the relevant authorities to report them.”
“We will also continue to provide full support to all those affected by the cowardly actions of a minority, and investigations are ongoing alongside our partner Signify.
“It is clear that racist abuse has no place in Irish society and the IRFU has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism in any form.”
The 23-year-old second row made 24 appearances for Munster, scoring 30 points.
Following Saturday’s thrilling win, Ireland coach Andy Farrell praised the new signing’s contribution in his post-match press conference.
“Well, we need to celebrate Edwin’s international debut, that’s for sure because it’s an amazing story,” Farrell said.
“I’m very happy that we were able to get the win and show some fight to get the win for him because his story is phenomenal so we’ll celebrate that with him.”
