In June 2023, the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV agreed to merge and the path to a unified sport appeared on the horizon.

But the negotiations between the two rounds, which included intervention from US President Donald Trump, are still continuing after two and a half years.

Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, 36, appealed to Europe’s biggest stars to “step up” and support the DP World Tour earlier this month.

“As someone who supports the traditional structure of men’s professional golf, we have to realize that we were trying to deal with people who were behaving, in some ways, irrationally, just in terms of the capital they were committing and the money they were spending,” McIlroy added.

“It’s been four or five years and there’s been no return yet, but they’re going to have to keep spending that money to even maintain what they have now.

“A lot of these people’s contracts are up. They’re going to ask for the same number or a bigger number. LIV has spent five or six billion US dollars and they’re going to have to spend another five or six billion dollars just to keep where they are.”

“I feel more comfortable being on the PGA Tour than being next to them but who knows what will happen.”

Bryson DeChambeau has become the biggest name to move from the PGA Tour to the LIV in 2022.

The American, who is under contract until 2026, admits that the two parties are still very far apart.

“I hope something big happens but I don’t think it will happen in the near future,” DeChambeau told Fox News Digital.

“I think there is too much desire on both sides and not enough giving on the other side.

“We’re very far apart on a lot of things. It’s going to take some time, but in the end, I think golf will grow globally.”
