The second American Domain will be built in an area known as National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Located along the Potomac River, National Harbor currently houses a convention center and several hotels, restaurants, and shops. While Abu Dhabi plans to build a large ballpark like the one in Las Vegas, the National Harbor site will be one of the first mini-venues, which was announced last March.
Its capacity will be limited to 6,000 seats instead of more than 17,000. But the smaller sphere is still hard to miss thanks to an LED outer shell to display “artistic content and branding” that helped make the original sphere a unique part of the Las Vegas skyline.
The Mini-Sphere’s interior will feature a 16,000 x 16,000-pixel high-resolution wrap-around display, the company’s immersive audio technology, haptic seating, and “4D environmental effects.” For the AI-enhanced version of Wizard of Oz Currently playing in Las Vegas, the audience experiences effects such as wind, fog, smells, and apples falling from the ceiling.
The mini-district will also likely be less expensive to build than the original $2.3 billion version, but its construction is contingent on “receiving certain government incentives and approvals from Prince George’s County and the state of Maryland.” Sphere Entertainment says the project “will use a mix of public and private funding, including nearly $200 million in state, local and private incentives,” but will likely generate millions of dollars in revenue for the state and nation while supporting more than 4,700 jobs once it opens.
