But Van de Ven’s magical moment quickly ended any hope of a comeback, as Copenhagen collapsed, despite being two men ahead, and Joao Balenha added a fourth. There was almost a fifth but Richarlison hit the crossbar from the penalty spot in extra time.

“We’re moving forward, but we’re not where we want to be,” Frank admitted afterward. “I saw a good performance, which I’m happy with. We talked about a bounce-back mentality and there will be setbacks in football, and that’s how you react after a bad period. We controlled the game from the first minute.”

For Van de Ven, it has been a mixed few days.

After the match against Chelsea, television footage showed him and teammate Jed Spence ignoring Frank, when the Dane motioned for them to go and acknowledge the home team’s fans.

Both players apologized after the incident, and Frank drew a line under that in Monday’s press conference

After Van de Ven’s goal, which will be talked about for years to come, Frank joked of the Dutchman: “He can keep going past me if he’s angry if he shoots like that.”
