- Starbucks is handing out reusable red cups on Thursday as part of its annual Red Cup Day promotion, which aims to reduce single-use waste.
- Dozens are already selling the limited-edition mug on eBay for prices up to $80.
Are you out of Starbucks red cups? Don’t worry: thanks to eBay, every day can be Red Cup Day.
Starbucks (SBUX) is hosting its annual Red Cup Day, where customers who order a holiday drink on Thursday will be eligible for a free 16-ounce reusable cup. The promotion lasts as long as supplies last, and in previous years some cafes have given out the last of their red and white cups in the early afternoon.
Availability of the cup does not appear to be an issue on eBay. Dozens of the 2025 Edition mugs are already up for sale on the site, with prices ranging from $7 to $80 each paired with “bearista” on the lid. More than 100 mugs of the previous version were sold on eBay last year, with prices averaging around $10, according to eBay Seller Hub data. Some are currently listed at prices into the five-figure range, although these prices seem exorbitant to say the least.
The red cups aim to reduce single-use waste. Starbucks is deducting $0.10 from orders when customers offer their own cup — a red cup, or something else — though it’s unclear how often that happens. Starbucks did not respond Investopedia Questions at time of publication.
Why this news matters to consumers
Starbucks cups aren’t the only item enjoying a moment. Sales of Pokémon cards, Labubu dolls, model cars and other limited edition items are booming, which means you might be able to make extra money from forgotten games.
There’s no doubt that the festive cups generate hype and sales for Starbucks. Many customers took to social media to share that lines were abnormally long on Red Cup Day. The company is sure to cheer business, with Starbucks’ turnaround campaign more than a year away.
The Java giant is using algorithms to serialize and speed up orders, while trying to make cafes a more enjoyable place to spend time. Last month, CEO Brian Nicol said the efforts were starting to pay off, as Starbucks broke a six-quarter streak of declining same-store sales.
Nicol told investors that Starbucks is the best hiring store, with the goal of improving customer experiences. However, Starbucks United Workers, a group organizing a union, launched a strike Thursday out of frustration over what it sees as understaffed stores, inadequate hours, inadequate wages, and other issues.
The Starbucks workers union said more than 1,000 baristas at 65 locations are participating in the so-called Red Cup Rebellion strike. The campaign could eventually impact about 550 locations, the group said. It was not immediately clear how much damage the strike caused. Starbucks and Starbucks Workers United did not respond Investopedia Inquiries are timely to be posted.
Starbucks shares recently fell about 1%, putting them down about 5% so far this year.
