British Jack Pennington-Jones’ dream in the Dallas Open ended at the hands of veteran Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals.
The 22-year-old qualified through two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the tournament, before beating Italian Flavio Copoli, ranked 20th in the world, and American Elliot Spizzeri, ranked 68th, to reach the quarter-finals.
However, in the first ATP Tour quarterfinal of his career, Pennington Jones lost to 2014 US Open champion Cilic 6-1, 6-4 in just 78 minutes.
The former world number three, 37, will meet the winner of the all-American match between top seed Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda for a place in the final.
At the Qatar Open, Canadian teenager Victoria Mpoko followed up her upset win over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko to reach the final.
The 19-year-old won 6-3, 6-2 to set up a title decider against Karolina Muchova, after the Czech 14th seed came from behind to defeat Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, a day after the Greek player ousted top seed Iga Swiatek.
