✅ Main takeaway:
Avatar director James Cameron described the AI actors as “terrifying” and said that what generative AI technology creates is “mediocre”.
Cameron was speaking to CBS on Sunday in the run-up to the release of the third Avatar movie, subtitled Fire and Ash, and was asked about the groundbreaking technology he used to make his films. After praising the motion-capture performance as a “celebration of the actor-director’s moment,” Cameron expressed his disdain for the artificial intelligence. “Go to the other end of the spectrum [from motion capture] And you have generative AI, where they can create character. They can form a representative. They can create a performance from scratch using a text message. It’s like no. This is terrifying to me. This is the opposite. This is exactly what we are no a job.”
He added: “I don’t want a computer to do what I pride myself on being able to do with actors. I don’t want to replace actors. I love working with actors.”
Cameron, who is director of UK-based Stability AI, said the creative benefits of AI are limited. “What generative AI can’t do is create something new that’s never been seen before. Models are trained on everything that’s been done before; it can’t be trained on something that’s never been done before. So you’ll see innately, basically, all the human art and human experience put into a blender, and you’ll get something that’s kind of an average of that. So what you can’t get is the unique lived experience of the individual screenwriter and their quirks. You’re not going to find the idiosyncrasies of a particular actor.”
“It also makes us have to set our standards at a very disciplined level, and continue to imagine outside the box. The act of performance, of seeing an artist create in real time, will become sacred,” he added.
