Former Republic of Ireland international James McClean has returned to Derry City on a multi-year deal after leaving Wrexham.
The 36-year-old previously played for the Candystripes from 2008 to 2011, winning the League of Ireland First Division title with the club in 2010.
McLean then moved to Premier League side Sunderland and also had spells in the Premier League with West Bromwich and Stoke City as well as two spells at Wigan Athletic, where he won the FA Cup in 2013 and the First League title in 2022.
The versatile midfielder joined Wrexham when the club was in League Two in 2023 and has since helped them to successive promotions to reach the Championship.
He was appointed as Wrexham captain in 2024 and made 108 appearances for the club, including 19 in all competitions that season.
McLean, who has won 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland, will join his brother Patrick McLean at the Brandywell after his arrival from Sligo Rovers on Thursday.
He is keen to make the step up on his return and help the club win their first Premier League title since 1997.
He told BBC Sport NI: “It’s been 15 years since I was the last Derry City player, which is a bit bittersweet because it’s ending 15 years in England, but coming home, I’m very happy and I can’t wait to get started.”
“I started my career in Derry and I made no mistake as I wanted to end my career, home is where the heart is.
“I’m as fit as I’ve ever been, I have the same desire and hunger and I still feel I have a lot to offer. When I was leaving Wrexham, the only place I was going was home.
He added: “For a club of this stature, going for almost 30 years without a league title is unacceptable, so I have a challenge and I love a challenge.”
