James Morrison thought he was playing in his farewell tournament – but instead returned to the DP World Tour with his 13-year-old son as holder.
The 40-year-old Englishman was ready to call it quits a day before he won the Rolex HotelPlanner Tour grand final in Mallorca on Sunday.
He hugged his son Finley on the 18th green after hitting a final-round victory from 70 under par to reach 15 under par and win by three shots from Italian Stefano Mazzoli.
“When I said this was going to be my last event, he was 100 percent in reality. It totally ruined it,” he said.
“I couldn’t feel my arm on my swing at the end. It went too far, but I couldn’t care less. A win is a win.”
“I feel really sorry for him (Finley). He’s got a six-thirty alarm to go to school tomorrow morning. He’s great. I love him. He’s done well.”
He brought the teenager as a caddy for the event at Club de Golf Alcanada.
The win means Morrison rises 30 places in the Road to Mallorca rankings to finish the season in sixth place and become one of 20 players guaranteed a place on the European Tour.
He returns a year after missing 14 cuts and losing his full-time status for the first time in 15 years.
Four more British players have qualified for the Tour this weekend – fellow Englishman Joshua Perry and Scots David Law, Daniel Young and Euan Walker.
