Jared Isaacman has been confirmed as the next head of NASA

The US Senate has approved the appointment of billionaire businessman Jared Isaacman as the new director of NASA. The private astronaut and founder of payment processing platform Shift4 will now be in charge of an agency facing significant uncertainty under President Trump.

Isaacman’s confirmation comes just over a year after Trump nominated him. It’s been a volatile year for Isaacman, with Trump withdrawing his nomination in June after becoming concerned about the billionaire’s “past associations.” (Isaacman had previously donated to Democrats, something Trump was aware of when he first nominated the businessman.)

This led to months of disagreements between the Trump camp and the people most closely associated with Isaacman, such as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who publicly attacked the credibility of acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. Trump eventually reversed in November and renominated Isaacman.

The billionaire will now oversee the space agency that Trump assigned to return to the moon. SpaceX has a contract to land astronauts on the moon, although Duffy has threatened to cancel that contract, and has encouraged Jeff Bezos’ rival Blue Origin to try to beat Musk’s efforts.
