Retired player Jarryd Waerea-Hargreaves finished his career in style by helping Hull KR complete the treble on Saturday with victory over Wigan in the Super League Grand Final.
So, perhaps the 36-year-old and his club could be forgiven for not paying attention to the suspensions that were handed out, rather frequently, in retrospect.
The Rugby Football League handed Wairia-Hargreaves a four-match suspension for “shoulder contact and other offensive behaviour” during the Old Trafford match.
He was originally ruled out of the final due to suspension before the club successfully appealed the decision.
Unsurprisingly, the Robins have now confirmed they will not appeal his latest and final ban., external
It means Wairea-Hargreaves ends his career with three trophies โ with Rovers having already lifted the Challenge Cup and League Leaders Shield โ and will never serve his ban.
Waerea-Hargreaves is not the first athlete in recent years to end his playing days with a mark against his name.
France legend Zinedine Zidane was sent off for a head-butt in his final match as a professional footballer in the 2006 World Cup final with Italy.
His fellow World Cup winner Gerard Pique was also shown a red card in a FC Barcelona match in 2022.
Edgar Davids, who, like Zidane and Pique, won the Champions League in his career, came out after Barnet’s red card against Salisbury in the fifth division in 2013.
